ChatGPT Cites Wikipedia. Perplexity Cites Reddit. Google AI Mode Cites YouTube. Here’s What That Means for Your GEO Strategy.

October 3, 2026

An analysis of 680 million AI citations published in early 2026 found that only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. On the same query, these two platforms pull from almost entirely different sources. Google AI Mode adds a third, separate citation pool. A single GEO strategy built around one of these platforms leaves your brand invisible on the other two — and that’s before accounting for Claude, Gemini, and Grok, which have their own distinct source hierarchies.

This post breaks down exactly how each major AI platform selects its citations, why the pools diverge so sharply, and what platform-specific investments close each gap.

Why the Citation Pools Don’t Overlap

The 11% cross-platform overlap isn’t a surprise once you understand the architecture. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode retrieve sources differently, train on different corpus weightings, and apply different ranking signals before generating a response.

ChatGPT’s retrieval layer is heavily influenced by its training data. When it generates a response with citations, it gravitates toward sources that appeared repeatedly in the pretraining corpus — encyclopedic sources, long-form editorial content, and established institutional domains. Perplexity, by contrast, is built as a live retrieval system: it performs real-time web searches and cites the freshest, most engagement-dense pages it finds. Reddit threads rank highly in real-time search retrieval. Wikipedia does not, because it doesn’t update in response to specific queries. Google AI Mode runs a hybrid: it uses Google’s indexing infrastructure, which has its own E-E-A-T signals and freshness weighting, plus a strong preference for Google properties.

Three different retrieval architectures produce three different citation lists. Building visibility for one doesn’t transfer to the others.

ChatGPT: The Wikipedia-First Citation Model

ChatGPT favors encyclopedic, reference-style content. Wikipedia and Wikipedia-adjacent sources account for 47.9% of ChatGPT’s top citations, according to the Profound analysis of 680 million citations. ChatGPT cites sources in 87% of responses — frequently, but from a narrow, authority-concentrated pool.

One key distinction: ChatGPT mentions brands 3.2 times more often than it cites them with links. This means brand-name familiarity matters for ChatGPT visibility, but the signal that drives it is different from the link-citation signal that Perplexity optimizes. A brand with high search volume, a Wikipedia entity entry, and consistent mentions in long-form editorial content will appear in ChatGPT responses more frequently — often without being linked, but with its name present in the generated answer.

For brands targeting ChatGPT visibility:

  • Wikipedia entity accuracy is the highest-leverage investment. If your brand has no Wikipedia article, or if the article is thin, outdated, or missing key attributes, ChatGPT will either skip you or hallucinate details. Wikidata entry accuracy is equally important for structured entity resolution.
  • Long-form editorial mentions in sources like industry publications, major news outlets, and established trade media feed ChatGPT’s training-data preference. PR coverage in these outlets has a measurable AI citation return alongside its other benefits.
  • Brand search volume shows a 0.334 correlation with AI citation frequency. A brand that people search for by name ranks higher in ChatGPT’s internal entity confidence than a brand with equivalent domain authority but low brand recognition.

Perplexity: The Reddit-Dependent Citation Engine

Perplexity’s citation behavior is structurally different from ChatGPT’s. It averages 21.9 citations per response — nearly double ChatGPT’s 10.4. And 46.7% of those citations point to Reddit, making Reddit the single largest source domain in Perplexity’s citation pool by a wide margin, according to Profound’s 680-million-citation dataset.

The reason is architectural. Perplexity runs live web retrieval optimized for freshness and community validation. Reddit threads surface high in that retrieval because they have dense engagement signals, are updated continuously, and cover almost every product and service category in first-person user language. Perplexity reads that as high-relevance source material.

For a brand that publishes only on its own domain, Perplexity’s citation architecture is the hardest to break into. A brand website, no matter how authoritative, doesn’t show up in the community-driven retrieval pattern that drives 46.7% of Perplexity’s citations.

For brands targeting Perplexity visibility:

  • Subreddit presence in relevant vertical communities is the most direct investment. Brands need threads that mention them in context — in subreddits where their category is discussed — not brand-controlled posts, but organic community mentions. Owned participation (answering questions, contributing product comparisons) builds this presence over time. The target is having your brand appear naturally in threads that Perplexity retrieves.
  • Review platform coverage on sites like G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and TripAdvisor matters for Perplexity because these platforms show up in live retrieval alongside Reddit. A brand with no third-party review presence lacks the corroborated mention pattern Perplexity’s retrieval system responds to.
  • Content freshness is more consequential on Perplexity than on ChatGPT because Perplexity retrieves live. Pages updated in the last 30 days outperform pages last updated 12 months ago in Perplexity’s citation selection.

Google AI Mode: The YouTube Multiplier

Google AI Mode pulls from Google’s indexing infrastructure, which means E-E-A-T signals, domain authority, and organic ranking position all carry some weight. But the most striking structural difference from both ChatGPT and Perplexity is Google AI Mode’s YouTube citation rate: YouTube accounts for 23.3% of all citations in Google AI Mode, making it the single most-cited domain on that platform.

Google AI Mode’s platform citation rate sits at 9.09% — lower than Perplexity’s 13.05% but significantly higher than ChatGPT’s 0.59% actual link-citation rate. The YouTube preference reflects Google’s cross-product integration: when a query has a strong video answer, Google AI Mode defaults to YouTube content. This creates a concrete citation gap for brands with no video presence.

The practical implication: a brand with comprehensive written content but no YouTube channel is structurally absent from the citation category that covers 23.3% of Google AI Mode responses. One substantive video per week on core category topics, with transcripts published to the brand’s website, addresses both the YouTube citation signal and the content freshness signal simultaneously.

For brands targeting Google AI Mode visibility:

  • YouTube presence is no longer optional for serious Google AI Mode citation strategy. Videos don’t need high production value — depth, specificity, and named entities in the audio track matter more. Transcripts on the brand site double as fresh text content for the standard retrieval layer.
  • E-E-A-T signals on core pages (named expert author, external source citations, recent publication or update dates) carry significantly more weight in Google AI Mode than in Perplexity. The December 2025 Core Update extended E-E-A-T requirements to all content categories, not just YMYL.
  • Google Business Profile accuracy matters for local and consumer queries in Google AI Mode in a way it doesn’t for ChatGPT or Perplexity.

The Platforms You’re Probably Ignoring: Grok and Claude

Grok’s surface citation rate looks impressive: 27.01% of responses include citations, the highest of any major platform. The data comes with a significant caveat. Columbia Journalism Review testing found that Grok-3 fabricates citations 94% of the time — the highest error rate of any platform tested. Gemini’s fabrication rate is 90%. Perplexity Sonar Pro, by contrast, achieved 37% citation accuracy in the same evaluation.

The practical implication for GEO: appearing in Grok’s citations doesn’t reliably mean your actual content was retrieved. Grok’s citation behavior is less governed by source quality and more by whatever its generation layer produces. For brands targeting Grok visibility specifically, investment in genuine entity coverage (Wikipedia, Wikidata, established editorial sources) matters — the same investments that drive ChatGPT entity confidence — because that’s what Grok draws on when it’s not hallucinating.

Claude’s citation behavior is understudied relative to the other platforms, but it weights established editorial sources, primary research, and named expert attribution highly. The overlap with ChatGPT’s citation pool is larger than with Perplexity’s — both lean toward high-authority, encyclopedic sources — but Claude places more emphasis on recent primary data and named studies than ChatGPT’s training-weighted retrieval.

Platform Prioritization: How to Allocate GEO Investment

Given the near-zero overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity citations, brands need to make explicit choices about which platforms matter most for their category and audience before allocating GEO investment.

For B2B software and enterprise services, ChatGPT and Google AI Mode are the higher-priority platforms — enterprise buyers use these tools for research more than Perplexity. Wikipedia entity accuracy, long-form editorial coverage, and YouTube product explainers drive the most impact here.

For e-commerce, consumer products, and lifestyle categories, Perplexity’s Reddit-heavy citation model matters more. Community discussions, review platform presence, and subreddit mentions in relevant buying communities determine whether Perplexity includes your brand in purchase-query responses.

For local businesses and professional services, Google AI Mode’s E-E-A-T signals and Google Business Profile accuracy are the primary levers. YouTube is relevant but secondary to the organic ranking and local signals Google AI Mode inherits from its indexing infrastructure.

The starting point for any platform-specific allocation is knowing which platforms are already citing you and which aren’t. A brand with 45% citation presence on Google AI Mode and 8% on Perplexity needs a different roadmap than one with the inverse distribution. The gap you’re trying to close determines which platform’s citation architecture you build toward.

The Measurement Problem

One structural challenge in platform-specific GEO is measurement. A Zen Media study published in September 2026 tracked a single brand across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok simultaneously and found a 4x spread: 15.5% citation presence on the worst-performing platform versus 59.5% on the best-performing. Testing citation presence on one platform and assuming it represents your overall AI visibility produces a systematically misleading picture.

Multi-platform citation tracking requires running the same core queries across all five major platforms and recording presence/absence for each. Since AI Overview content changes approximately 70% of the time when the same query runs on different days, single-point measurements are also unreliable — citation presence tracking needs rolling averages across 4+ weeks to separate genuine visibility from variance.

The 11% domain overlap figure makes the cross-platform measurement imperative concrete: you can’t infer your Perplexity performance from your ChatGPT performance. They’re measuring different things from nearly different source pools.
