One GEO Strategy Won’t Work Across All AI Platforms. Here’s the Data That Proves It.

July 12, 2026

A Muck Rack survey published July 9, 2026 found that 73% of PR and marketing professionals now consider AI search visibility a strategic priority. That same study found that 39% aren’t measuring it at all — and 29% said nobody at their organization even owns it. The disconnect is significant, but there’s a deeper problem underneath it: the brands that are running GEO programs are mostly running one undifferentiated strategy and hoping it lands everywhere.

New citation data from multiple large-scale analyses makes clear that it won’t. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews pull from almost entirely separate source pools, reward different content types, and respond to different signals. Optimizing for one without accounting for the others is leaving most brands invisible on at least two of the three major platforms.

The Citation Pool Problem: 11% Overlap

Averi’s analysis of 680 million AI-generated citations found only an 11% overlap between domains cited by ChatGPT and domains cited by Perplexity. That means roughly 89% of the content each platform credits comes from different sources entirely. A brand with strong ChatGPT citations has very little carry-over to Perplexity, and vice versa.

Ranketai’s April 2026 deep-dive made the gap even starker in absolute terms: ChatGPT’s brand citation rate across analyzed queries was 0.7%, while Perplexity’s was 13.8%. That’s not a minor discrepancy — the two platforms are operating with fundamentally different retrieval logic, not just different content preferences.

The reason comes down to architecture. ChatGPT (outside of its browsing mode) generates most answers from training data, then supplements with real-time retrieval selectively. Perplexity is built as a retrieval-first engine: it performs live web searches on almost every query and assembles answers from what it finds in the current index. These are different systems with different inputs, and the content that wins in each one reflects that.

What ChatGPT Actually Cites

When ChatGPT does cite external sources, Wikipedia dominates at 47.9% of citations in the Ranketai dataset. That number reflects the platform’s training data bias: Wikipedia’s clean structure, breadth of coverage, and consistent formatting made it heavily represented in the pretraining corpus. Brands that appear prominently on Wikipedia — either through their own article or through mentions in relevant industry pages — inherit some of that signal.

Beyond Wikipedia, ChatGPT tends to cite authoritative domains with long-standing web presence: major news publications, well-established industry databases, government sources. A brand’s best path to ChatGPT citations is building entity authority that exists independently of any single piece of content — Wikidata entries, named mentions in industry reports, structured data on the homepage that explicitly establishes the brand as a distinct entity with verifiable identifiers.

Content freshness matters less to ChatGPT than to Perplexity. A two-year-old piece on a high-authority domain can drive ChatGPT citations just as well as a recent one, because the platform isn’t primarily indexing the current web.

What Perplexity Actually Cites

Perplexity operates with a fundamentally different freshness curve. Ranketai’s analysis found that content under 30 days old receives 3.2x more citations from Perplexity than older content on comparable topics. The platform’s real-time retrieval model means recency is a genuine ranking signal — not just a tie-breaker.

Reddit is the single largest source category in Perplexity’s citation set at 46.7%. That figure reflects both the platform’s retrieval logic (Reddit threads surface naturally in live search results for high-intent questions) and a deliberate design decision by Perplexity to include community-sourced, real-experience content as a counterbalance to polished brand content. For brands, this means Reddit presence — through genuine community participation, not promotional posts — has measurable impact on Perplexity citation rates in a way it doesn’t on ChatGPT.

Perplexity also favors content that directly answers the query phrasing. FAQ-structured pages, step-by-step guides, and content that opens with a direct answer to the implied question outperform long-form narrative pieces, particularly for informational queries. This is one area where GEO tactics overlap: structured, direct-answer content helps across platforms, even if for different underlying reasons.

What Google AI Overviews Actually Cites

Google AI Overviews has expanded its citation behavior significantly in the past year. A June 2026 benchmark found an average of 13.34 source citations per AI Overview response, up from roughly 6.82 in 2024 — nearly double. That expansion means more citation slots are available, but it also means competition for them has increased proportionally.

Reddit holds 21% of Google AI Overview citations in recent analyses, which aligns with Google’s well-documented indexing of Reddit content post the 2024 data licensing deal. A separate finding from the 5W PR AI Platform Citation Source Index confirms that the 50 most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews skew heavily toward community platforms, established news outlets, and reference databases — not brand content.

The key difference between Google AI Overviews and the other two platforms is the relationship to traditional SEO. A CiteLens benchmark confirmed that Google AI Mode draws 90% of its citations from Google’s top-10 organic results. That means ranking well in organic search remains the most reliable path to Google AI Overview citations — schema markup, E-E-A-T signals, and domain authority all still matter here in ways they don’t for ChatGPT or Perplexity.

The Strategic Split: What to Prioritize

Given that these platforms pull from different pools with different signals, a platform-informed GEO strategy looks something like this:

For ChatGPT citations: Focus on entity establishment. Build or claim your Wikidata entry. Get your brand mentioned (not just linked) in Wikipedia articles covering your industry. Publish well-structured Organization schema on your homepage with sameAs links to Wikidata, LinkedIn, and Crunchbase. The goal is making your brand an identifiable entity in the world’s structured knowledge graph, not just a website.

For Perplexity citations: Publish frequently. Content under 30 days old gets a 3.2x citation boost — a publishing cadence of 2-3 substantive pieces per week is more effective than monthly long-form. Participate genuinely in Reddit communities relevant to your category (not to promote, but to establish presence). Structure content as direct answers to specific questions, with the response in the first paragraph rather than buried three sections in.

For Google AI Overviews: Treat this as an extension of traditional SEO with schema layered on top. Rank in the top 10 for your target queries — that’s the primary qualifier. Add FAQPage and HowTo schema to content that maps to question-format queries. The June 2026 Stackmatix analysis finding a 2.5x AI Overview trigger rate for content with comprehensive schema holds here specifically; it doesn’t transfer as directly to Perplexity or ChatGPT.

The Measurement Problem

The 39% of marketers who aren’t measuring GEO at all are flying blind — but the marketers who are measuring it face a secondary problem: most tracking tools collapse these three platforms into a single “AI visibility” score. That aggregation hides the divergence that matters strategically.

A brand might have strong Perplexity citation rates (driven by a high publishing frequency and Reddit presence) while being nearly invisible in ChatGPT (no Wikidata entry, no third-party entity mentions). An aggregate score averages out the signal and masks which platforms need work.

The fix is platform-level tracking. Run your target queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews separately, on a weekly basis, and record citation rates per platform. That segmented view is what tells you whether your investments are landing where you intended.

Conclusion

The data from 2026 is unambiguous: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews are not variants of the same system. They have different architectures, different retrieval logic, different freshness curves, and different source biases. Optimizing for one of them does not transfer to the others in any reliable way.

The brands building citation share on all three platforms are running differentiated strategies — entity-building for ChatGPT, frequent publishing and community presence for Perplexity, and traditional SEO plus schema for Google. That’s more work than a single undifferentiated GEO playbook, but the 11% citation overlap number makes the case that the single playbook isn’t actually working anyway.
